Nancy Kabiru, a mental health champion, is the Lead Psychologist and Founder Hisia Psychology Consultants. She is a trained counseling psychologist, clinical hypnotherapist and life coach.
Why is it important for us to open up more about our feelings and struggles?
Nancy: It is important for everyone to keep a close circle of friends that we can rely on for mental health support – a power team. When we are low or disturbed, these friends are able to notice the changes and support us. We should also be open to feedback and strive to interpret it positively. This way, no one will stay isolated and the chances of feeling lonely are minimized.
What’s the society’s role in championing mental wellness?
Nancy: As a society, we need to be very supportive of our brothers and sisters who are battling mental health conditions and direct them to avenues where they can get professional help.
There is no shame in seeking help. We all get emotionally and mentally overburdened from time to time and as such, we should not be afraid or embarrassed when getting help.

How can those who are too embarrassed to open up get help?
Nancy: There is no shame in seeking help. We all get emotionally and mentally overburdened from time to time, and as such, we should not be afraid or embarrassed when getting help. It’s okay not to be okay. It’s okay to find help, either through our friends, partners, or professional psychologists.
What you share with a therapist is ethically confidential. We are trained to be empathetic and professional. A therapist will never shame you and would have interventions at their fingertips.
